Qing-Huang Tunnel

The Qing-Huang Tunnel is an under-sea road tunnel located in Shandong Province in eastern People's Republic of China. It transects Jiaozhou Bay, connecting Huangdao District with the city of Qingdao (see map).[1] It is 9.47 kilometres (5.88 mi) long with a portion of that underwater.[2] It began construction on December 27, 2006[3] and was completed over five years later when it opened on July 1, 2011, two months after the scheduled opening date. It opened the same day as the nearby Jiaozhou Bay Bridge, considered at the time the world's longest open water bridge by Guinness World Records.[4] The bridge and tunnel were planned together as the Jiaozhou Bay Connection Project.[5]
